Abstract: In the new context created by new media, globalisation and the construction of a harmonious society, defining news based on facts, reporting and information neglects the diversity of communication subjects, rejects the standpoint of social values and confines it to the mode of mass communication. This makes the news inadaptable to updated practices and career requirements. This paper proposes redefining the concept of news as “the semiotic narration of newly occurred or discovered facts”. Furthermore, it emphasises how characteristics such as “factuality”, “timeliness” and “publicity” distinguish the news from other genres.
