The discourse on the issues of beauty and meaning has left readers desiring more and continues to stimulate scholars in their quest for deeper insights into the relationship between signs, art and everyday life. As a part of this academic pursuit, a section of this issue is dedicated to “Semiotic Aesthetics”. Duan Lian adeptly combines art history, theoretical analysis and readers’ criticism in scrutinising the intricate construction of triple narratives through an art historical lens. Michael Renta delves into the issue of visual cognition within the realm of visual arts, thereby instigating an extensive discussion on the essentialist nature of art. Lu Zhenglan expounds upon contemporary design’s penchant for abstract art from the perspective of the unity of design and the meaning of objects.
Language, thought and reason are focal points of semiotic inquiry. In the section on “Philosophical Semiotics”, Zhou Jing explores the influence of semiotic reason as a third mode of rationality upon our cognitive processes. Cao Zhong, drawing from the wellspring of the Mind-only School of philosophy, scrutinises the generation and eradication of semiotic ambiguities. Liu Yuanjia elucidates the connotations and manifestations of neutral signs. Chen Yaling meticulously examines the philosophies espoused by Heidegger regarding the discourse of Tao.
In the section on the “Semiotics of Communication”, Feng Yueji discusses the paradigm shifts engendered by the digital age within the sphere of journalistic professionalism. Jiang Shiping contributes an insightful discourse on the communities that are pervasive in Chinese brand communication. Ren Hongzeng probes the depths of the semiotic narratology of “looking at the camera” in films. Shen Yifang carefully dissects the artistic manifestations of artificial intelligence from the perspective of Peircean semiotics. Furthermore, this issue incorporates the intellectual deliberations of multiple scholars on such subjects as cultural memory, stylistic paradigms and gardening and penjing. It is our firm belief that these scholarly endeavours shall engender fresh contemplations and serve as a wellspring of inspiration for our esteemed readers.
Signs and Media upholds an inclusive academic philosophy, embracing a diversity of scholarly perspectives, and we wholeheartedly welcome the independent research of ambitious master’s and doctoral students alongside that of young scholars. Our journal is open-minded and looks forward to the participation of diverse voices.
