SIGNS & MEDIA NO.22 2021 SPRING
Methods to develop Chinese semiotic studies have always been the core concerns of Chinese colleagues. In the section “Cultural Semiotics of Jingshen”, Zhang Jie and Yu Hongbing explore the meaningful world in a rich and diversified way grounded in the traditional Chinese cognitive model of ‘human oneness with nature’ and the philosophical thoughts of Taoism. Chen Zhong and Yao Tingting specifically discuss the cognitive model of “unity of three-tiered self-cultivation” in Chinese philosophy. Moreover, the authors of the section “Traditional Semiotic Thoughts in China”, Cao Zhong, Lan Xing and Ji Hong, examine Buddhist signs in the Tang and Song Dynasties, the signifying mechanism in The Five Phases, and the pedagogical significance of Poetry of Songs, respectively. Their explorations in Chinese philosophical thoughts and canons address the essentials in constructing Chinese semiotics.
The year 2020 will be remembered for the events that occurred, which have been integrated into the framework of meaning production and communication with amazing speed, and the events even became the framework itself. In the section “Semiotics of Communication”, Guo Lin studies the meaning of infection as a metaphor of illness in the epidemic prevalence of the digital age. Wu Xiaohong et al. discuss the relation between city and media. In addition, Shi Lei and Zhu Haoyun focus on the carnival phenomenon of blind box consumption and semiotics of tourism respectively.
Out of unexpected reality comes the predictable impulse and passion originating from human being as the semiotic animal in their permanent pursuit of meaning. This issue brings together some wonderful discussions of semiotics and narratology in the fields of pictorial philosophy, drama and dance, classical texts, narration of literature history and others. As usual, we also advance our annual report of semiotics for 2020, in which we review for your reference this year’s significant works and academic activities in the field of semiotics.
