SIGNS & MEDIA NO.24 2022 SPRING
The exploration of meaning is an everlasting theme for human beings and is integral to the exploration of various fields of intellectual inquiry at home and abroad, from which it derives a variety of forms and structures. When the search for meaning turns to itself, and the question of the meaning of meaning emerges, semiotic methods resonate in a wide range of fields. Several of the papers in this issue are reflective of such a process. In section “Philosophical Semiotics”, Wu Xiaoming applies narrative analysis to the study of the dialogism and philosophical connotation of The Analects, Jiang Shiqiang summarises and discusses the contribution of the semiotic thought of Wittgenstein, Chen Wenbin discusses the significance of currency as a sign, and Hao Juan explores the physical dimension of Lacan’s gender theory.

Traditional aesthetics are under challenge by contemporary art’s exploration of new genres and new media. Section “Semiotic Aesthetics in the Art Industry” engages with these issues. Lu Zhenglan and Zhang Ke propose the concept and classification of the art industry to construct a basic framework for the discussion of semiotic aesthetics and the art industry; Hu Yirong and Han Jiaxiang explore the issue of art as a medium in the definition of art and expand the discussion to the necessity of establishing a semiotics of art media; and Zhou Shangqin puts forward an effective method to identify art in a “pan-artistic” era.

Umberto Eco remains an undoubted star of semiotics for his research into meaning and its production. In Section “Umberto Eco Studies”, Li Jing explores Eco’s relationship with and influence on Chinese semiotics, Cao Yifan investigates Eco’s research on popular culture, and Guo Quanzhao discusses Eco’s absorption of medieval history and culture in his novels. These essays bring us closer to the works of Eco, whose knowledge and insights are a constant inspiration to contemporary scholars.

As in every spring issue, an annual report on the development of Chinese semiotics is also provided, presenting the highlights, statistics, and trends in papers, works, and conferences related to Chinese semiotics during 2021.
