Abstract: The foundation laid by Charles Sanders Peirce for semiotics one century ago has been replacing Saussure’s to become the cornerstone of the discipline today. There are a number of reasons behind the replacement. First of all, Peirce held a far-reaching view on the nature of form, which turns semiotics into “the mathematics of human sciences”. The triadic system that Peirce designed is open to unlimited semiosis. His confidence in the human mind’s affinity with “truth” through the “community of inquiry” makes signification an intersubjective cement for society. Though his works are not easy to read due to the fact that his wholelife was spent in adverse conditions unsuitable for academic thinking, returning to Peirce will definitely help the Chinese semiotic movement push forward to new heights.
