The Linear Time of Rituals: A Study of Semiotic Narratology

Abstract: Ritual, as an index of history, is a mechanism for memorising the past, presenting the present and instructing the future. From the perspective of semiotic narratology, ritual has the characteristics of recorded narration, performing narration and conative narration; it references the existing object and writes its future interpretation. Threading together the past, present and future, ritual is related to the linearity of time.
