General Narratology: Opportunities and Challenges for Literature Studies

Abstract: The birth of general narratology creates both opportunities and challenges for traditional literature studies. Through a thorough analysis of general narratology, this essay explores its paradoxes and significance, and then goes a step further to illustrate how literature studies can cope with the new ideas of general narratology while holding fast to the values of the humanities. The essay consists of four parts: a survey of the origins of general narratology; an analysis of the theory of general narratology; the significance of general narratology; and the challenge of general narratology to literature studies.
