Abstract: In a dialogue between Marxist political economy and semiotics, the resulting Marxist semiotics could embrace commodities, money, markets and ideology into its scope, not only to construct the ideographic mechanisms of symbols, but also to uncover the interpretative metalanguage behind them. As a critical discipline, Marxist political economy raises new questions in the study of semiotics and emphasises the importance of symbols in social culture and history. This paper explores key issues in the semiotics of Marxist political economy, exploring new ways to develop the discipline.
Key words: Marxist semiotics, political economy, commodity, currency, symbol
