The Semiotic Self and Aesthetics in Zen Koan

Abstract: Zen Koan reveals the inexpressible nature of the self via its unique sign system. In Zen Koan, the real self becomes clear when the semiotic self disappears; only thus can the real self be represented and the unspeakable spoken. From the perspective of the semiotic self, this paper discusses the phenomenological and semiotic significance of the aesthetics ofZen Koan.
