The Association for Asian Studies (AAS), the Asia Research Institute (ARI), and the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) of the National University of Singapore are pleased to announce the inaugural AAS-in-ASIA conference, "Asia in Motion: Heritage and Transformation," to be held July 17–19, 2014 at the National University of Singapore.
We seek to attract a wide range of panel proposals from humanists and social scientists, as well as reflective practitioners from the worlds of policy, civil society, journalism, and other professional fields.
The AAS-in-ASIA conference will build upon emerging visions and trends in Asian studies within Asia. By bringing together scholars and specialists on Asia within Asia as well as from other parts of the world at a gathering in Asia, we hope to spark new and fruitful collaborations. The AAS also expects to reach out to scholars of Asia who might not usually attend an AAS conference in North America. It is our hope that the conference will stimulate new networks among scholars within Asia and beyond, providing broader inter-continental connections for the future of Asian studies.
The AAS-in-ASIA, "Asia in Motion" conferences, are not intended to take the place of the AAS Annual Conference held each spring in North America. They will have programs of roughly 50 panels with an anticipated total of 300–500 participants, including panelists.
The inaugural AAS-in-ASIA conference in SINGAPORE in 2014 will be followed by conferences in TAIPEI in 2015 and KYOTO in 2016.
AAS-in-ASIA conferences will be held in summer to make it possible for participants—especially those from North America and Europe—to combine attendance at the conference with a research trip to Asia.
For the Singapore conference, we seek to attract proposals for panels and roundtables (no individual paper proposals will be considered) dealing with all regions of Asia on subjects covering a wide range of scholarly disciplines and professional fields under the theme "Heritage and Transformation." Proposals are encouraged on topics as diverse as political and economic changes, literature and culture, environment and sustainability, media and pop culture, food and energy, globalization, urban issues, and new models for Asian enterprise and business.
The 2014 conference will be held at NUS's beautiful new U-Town campus. An educational hub complete with residential spaces, teaching facilities and study clusters, U-Town creates a lively intellectual, social, and cultural environment. It offers conference and educational facilities with state-of-the-art technology, food and beverage facilities, and social spaces, all within walking distance of the main campus and close to transportation networks to the city center and attractions.
Accommodation at affordable rates will be available in U-Town dormitories at NUS. Arrangements have also been made at area hotels, to provide a variety of housing options.
The 2014 AAS-in-ASIA conference is jointly sponsored by the Association for Asian Studies (AAS), the Asia Research Institute (ARI), and the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) of the National University of Singapore, with support from the Singapore Tourism Board.
