On August 18, 2014, the Guidelines for Promoting the Convergent Development of Traditional Media and New Media was approved by the fourth plenary session of the Central leading group for Comprehensive Deepening Reforming China. The Guidelines, as a top design, is widely considered critical to initiate a new wave of deepening convergence and comprehensive transformation of Chinese media and ICTs industries. The Guidelines also pointed out the specific goals, approaches and tasks for the convergence, which is quite clear and operational in terms of further processes of implementation. Actually, it is believed that the promotion of the convergence between traditional media and new media aims to build a series of new mainstream media conglomerates with multiple platforms and products, advanced technological strengths and competitiveness, domestically and internationally. These prospective media conglomerates are required to own capacities of economy, communication, public trust and influence. Furthermore, they are regarded as the basis to form a diverse and convergent modern communication system. Needless to say, this is not only a national communication system based in China, but also matters for the formation of a new global information and communication order, in which China and Chinese media are supposed to play an important role.
Along with both the technical development of Internet and mobile communications and the deepening of media convergence as well as new media and human behavior, the interplay of politics, economy and culture have been the center of discussion for academia and industries. Meanwhile, the world information and communication structure is in the middle of transition against the background of world power structure in transformation. Therefore, whether a new world information and communication order is possible is attracting global attention, particularly with a focus on the dynamic roles of China and other emerging economies from the Global South.
The education and research of journalism and communication have been influenced as well. A new academic map is expected to draw against the background of new structure and new order. Taking foreign language universities in China as entry point, the 2015 China Communication Forum also includes special sessions on this topic and brings together scholars in a broad field of foreign language teaching, journalism, communication and international studies across the country.
Therefore, the 2015 China Communication Forum is designed to focus on both the formation of modern communication system and the discipline building and teaching reform for foreign language universities in China. At the conference, it is noteworthy that the second “Report for China’s International Communication” (International Communication Bluebook) will be released. As a newly founded bluebook series, the Report is getting wide readership in China ranging from government officials, media professionals, scholars and students. Please be noted that the book is also calling for participations. Despite the fact that the book is published only in Chinese, we do open for English submissions. We would like to help accepted submissions find suitable translator. Feel free to contact us if you are interested in both the conference and the book.
