Abstract: Narrative is one form of language practice, and European narratologists have studied a feature known as “free indirect discourse”. Classic narratology explores the nature of the double subject as expressed by “free indirect discourse” in the modern novel. Whilst postclassicalnarratology regards a novel as a great quotation relayed by the implied author, from the perspective of grand narrative, a film is a great quotation relayed by the director. However, author films feature free indirect discourse. In this kind of movie, there is competition between the subjectivity of the director and the actor.
