From Semantic Triangle to Semantic Circle
Yang Sai
Abstract:According to traditional Chinese language philosophy, the semantic triangle, consisting of signs, interpreter and object, is not a self-sufficient system of reference. Once a sign has no interpreter, or becomes attribute-less to its object, it no longer has a referent function, and it cannot indicate the general, supra-temporal ontological characteristics of ‘Tao’ and ‘Xuan’.Semiotic resources can be found in the theories of Confucianism, Taosim, Mohism, Legalism, Mingism,Syncretism andBuddhism. In an attempt toestablish connections between signs, interpreter and object and to reveal the generality and supra-temporality of objects, WeijinMetaphysics proposes the theory of ‘Xiang’ (Image), which makes Chinese semiotic thoughts self-sufficient and poetic.
