Sustainable development involves the changes and needs within local contexts in relation to global concerns to maintain a harmonious life condition for humanity. To sustain such an equilibrium, considerable collaboration and effort needs to be expended in order to initiate policies, apply principles, and organize activities across continents, regions and sub-regions. With all its strengths and weaknesses Asia, in particular, has striven to achieve such balanced development. The role and contribution of research in language, communication, and culture as a key to sustaining development will therefore be highlighted in this year's International Conference on Language and Communication.
