Meet me here at the same time tomorrow with a stick this long.
这里,Me,here,the same time,tomorrow,和this long等词语的本义都是清楚的,但听话人需要一定的背景信息才能明白说话人的用意, 即通过当时在场的人物确定me 是谁, 通过他们所在的地点确定here的方位,通过他们当时会面的时间(the same time )确定下次会面的时间,从他们当时会面的日期知道第二天(tomorrow)的日期,用周围可表示长度概念的事物(如栏杆)或用手的比划知道该多长(this long)的棍子。 Crystal(1991:78-79)认为, 语境关系到一个语篇的语言的和非语言的全部背景。
